The Moth: What We’re Listening To

Who doesn’t love a good podcast? Recently, Mackey’s been seriously digging The Moth and she thinks you’ll like it, too.

The Moth: 25 Years of Humanity One Story at a Time

Since its launch in 1997, The Moth has presented thousands of true stories, told live and without notes, to standing-room-only crowds worldwide. Moth storytellers stand alone, under a spotlight, with only a microphone and a roomful of strangers.

The podcast version of this international storytelling phenomenon first launched in 2008 and features some of The Moth’s “best” live performances from stages around the country.

Each episode serves as a reminder that our stories, when shared openly and honestly, carry great power.

Think of it as “People of New York” for your ears. Each story honors and celebrates the diversity and commonality of the human experience.

Some episodes that’ll get you hooked include:

A Flight Attendant, A Refugee, and A Preacher

A flight attendant describes how she adjusts her attitude while up in the air; a Vietnamese family is forced to flee from their home to take refuge in an unknown land; and after running out of gas, a young preacher in 1960s Texas ends up in a pool hall.

The First Elf with Simon Doonan

A stylist stirs up controversy when called on to decorate the White House for Christmas.

International Women’s Day 2021 with Beth de Araújo

A story of resilience. After witnessing a sexual assault in her childhood, Beth deals with the trauma as an adult.

Chess, Romance, and Kathmandu

The first African American Grandmaster details his unorthodox education and the private chess match that defines him; a socialite trying to escape an unhappy marriage accidentally crashes the coronation of the king of Nepal, and an octogenarian makes a romantic connection with a man she worked with over a half a century before.
