Tax Checklist

It’s everyone’s favorite time of year again. No, I know the holiday season is over. I am talking about tax season. Alright, I know it’s not really your favorite time of year.  However, hopefully, we can make this time of year less stressful. Regardless of whether you get a refund or end up owing the taxes, the first step to an easier tax season is being prepared and organized. Below is a list of the major items you should consider and capture based on what applies to your tax situation as you gear up to get your taxes filed:

Income items:

  • W2’s

  • Retirement distributions – 1099R’s

  • Social Security benefits

  • Contracted income – 1099 MISC

  • Interest, dividend, and capital gain income

  • Business income

Deductions:

  • Medical and Dental expenses

  • Taxes – property, auto, state income taxes

  • Mortgage interest

  • Charitable contributions

  • Self-employed health insurance

  • Student loan interest

  • Dependent care expenses

  • Tuition and educational expenses

  • Retirement plan contributions

  • Business expenses

This list does not cover every single item that may impact your tax situation, but it should cover the majority of items for most. You should start to see many of your final tax documents come in the mail over the next few weeks. Use this list as a checklist to keep everything organized as it comes and you are one step closer to a less stressful tax season.
